Press-Fit Technology

Press-fit technology is one of the core competences of the Würth Elektronik Intelligent Connecting Systems.

before / after

Thanks to the specific benefits of press-fit technology for printed circuit board connectivity, effective problem solutions become both possible and practical, for example

  • Elimination of complex and fault-prone wiring
  • Simple realisation of plug and play systems
  • Simple realisation of three-dimensional design through right-angled press-fit connectors
  • Compact realisation of keypads and control panels

The benefits of press-fit technology

As compared with conventional solder technology, the use of press-fit technology shows a number of advantages:

  • possibility for populating both sides of the printed circuit board without added expense
  • elimination of thermal stress of the printed circuit board
  • elimination of soldering errors such as, for example, cold solder places, solder short-circuits, …
  • screw mountings are no longer necessary
  • elimination of flux residues which can result in contact faults
  • in comparison to machine soldering, size restriction of the assemblies to be processed no longer has to be considered
  • long plug connector posts remain clean (no solder) and can be used as male connectors on the other side of the board
  • assemblies with press-fit technology are also best suited for high-frequency applications as printed circuit board impedances can be specifically defined
  • simplification of repairs due to easily exchangeable connectors
  • high environmental compatibility

Würth Elektronik ICS have specialised in the implementation of solid press-fit technology for high current applications. In a series of theoretical and experimental investigations, we could scientifically prove that solid press-fit technology is outstandingly suitable for use in this area due to the optimum electrical properties.
